Reading Syllabus

Description:  This course is designed to introduce students to the world of reading and writing. Mastery of all letters and at least one sound per letter is expected. Recognition and writing of many high frequency words will be expected. All students will be able to blend sounds together to make words and to read grade appropriate books.  Also, each child will be able to write a sentence.  The text uses 36 main literature selections to introduce different elements of reading.  State Standards will be an emphasis. Mastery of areas will be determined by formal and informal testing; teacher observation and checklist will be used frequently.


Aspects of reading that will be introduced or mastered are listed below.


Concepts of Print and Awareness


Understanding that print represents and means something

Understanding concepts letters, words, sentences

Uses some punctuation and capitalization


Phonological and Phonemic Awareness


Recognize and produce rhyming words

Count words in a sentence

Count Syllables

Identify whether sounds and words are the same or different

Identify beginning, middle, and ending sounds

Blend sounds to make words

Add, delete, or substitute phonemes

Use context and syntax to decode words




Read aloud with fluency

Read high frequency words automatically




Understand and recognize introduced vocabulary and use it appropriately

These are only part of the elements and resources that are introduced.  I use many other aids also.  I use the Mailbox Companion, Leap Frog, Scholastic Books, computer games, Dr. Jean learning songs, letter bingo, white boards, signs, plus anything else we can relate to reading.  We also have journals we write in several times a week.




My main goal is for each child in my class to enjoy reading which will help them in every aspect of their education.

Description: This course is designed to develop a solid foundation of math concepts through the daily math meeting, lessons, hands-on practice, centers, handwriting, paper and pencil lessons and assessments.  State standards and beyond will be mastered. Assessment will be formal and informal along with teacher observation.


Math skills to be mastered or introduced are as listed below.


Number Sense and Numeration


Counts by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s and 10’s

Identifies, reads and writes numbers (State standards are to 20, Saxon 

   30, but we work up to 100.)
