EXPLANATION OF TERMS AND SCORING:

*DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOR: Students will lose points for any disruptive behaviors.  Behaviors that result in a loss of class time should logically affect the student’s classroom performance grade.  Students will learn that they are accountable for their behavior at all times.

*REMINDERS ABOUT FOLLOWING CLASS RULES OR STAYING ON TASK:  Occasionally, students need to be reminded of rules, or they need to be reminded to stay on task.  A loss of points in these areas tells students that they must remember to be self-disciplined.

*TARDINESS:  A loss of points for tardiness demonstrates to students that they can earn points for their performance once they are in class, but that being late for class affects their overall evaluation.  Students who have not learned to arrive on time will have difficulty maintaining a job.

*LATE WORK:  A loss of points for late work is a clear demonstration to students that they are accountable for turning in work at a specified time.  The student will lose two participation points for failing to have the assignment ready on the day it is due as well as losing the assignment’s points.

*UNEXCUSED ABSENCES:  If students have an unexcused absence or any type of suspension, they obviously have not taken advantage of the opportunity to earn points.  Therefore, students earn no participation points and are given no opportunity to make up the points.

*EXCUSED ABSENCES:  If students have any excused absence, they will be allowed to earn the credit they have missed.  They will have an opportunity to make up the points by doing whatever was assigned.  When class time is missed, less learning takes place.  Thus, a small extra assignment may be assigned to compensate for the lost time.  Students will learn that they are accountable for making up class time and that absences are only worthwhile when unavoidable.

This procedure would also apply to students who miss class due to involvement in sports and other extracurricular activities.  If at any point a student has a serious illness, exceptions will be made.  If a student is out of class over an extended period of time, points will be awarded as regular work is made up.

*SENT OUT OF CLASS:  If a student is sent out of class, he or she has lost the opportunity to earn performance points for that day and is penalized for the severity of the disruption.
