The Principal’s Corner

“We Challenge, You Succeed”

I pen my column this week feeling a little bit nostalgic!  This will be the final “The Principal’s Corner” I write for the Linn-Palmer Record.  I cannot even imagine how many total articles I actually wrote during the past twenty years but I did enjoy sharing with you the many accomplishments of our students and staff during that time.  Some people have asked me how I chose “The Principal’s Corner” for the title of my articles and I think many people assumed it was my exclusive corner of our weekly paper.  However, the title comes from my time as a teacher and working with Mr. Learned.  Mr. Learned would type up all of his articles, daily bulletins and other memos on a manual typewriter tucked into the corner of his office.  I often referred to that table as his “little corner of the world” and when I took over this position it was my way of showing respect to a man I considered one of my mentors.  I hope you have enjoyed my weekly articles as much as I have enjoyed writing about the accomplishments of twenty years of Bulldog activities!

We will be celebrating Commencement Exercises for the Class of 2016 this coming Sunday, May 15th, at 1:00 pm.  We have a group of eleven young men and women who will be the focus of our attention during the ceremonies.  Hanna Bott will deliver the Valedictorian address and Liza van der Merwe will deliver the Salutatorian address.  The Senior Video will also be shown as we highlight the last four years for our class members.  The video is created by our Multimedia class under the direction of Mrs. Jennifer Dague and has become a constant feature over the past two decades.  Future plans for our graduates include two who will continue their studies at 4 year colleges, four students are heading off to junior college, two who will be enrolling in a technical college, two more will be entering the work force and one who will return to his native Brazil.  We want to wish all of our graduates the very best in the future.

Both the TVL Track meet and TVL Golf meet are scheduled for this week and both events are hosted by Valley Heights.  The golf meet is actually this afternoon with regionals scheduled for next Monday, May 16th.  The track meet is this Thursday with field events starting at 3:00 pm.  We would like to invite everyone to come on over the Valley Heights and cheer on our Bulldogs!

Promotion ceremonies for out 8th grade and Kindergarten students will be hosted on May 17th at 7:00 pm.  Featured speakers for the evening will be Hanna Bott, Class of 2016 Valedictorian and Liza van der Merwe, Class of 2016 Salutatorian who will share their thoughts about what is takes to be successful in high school!  We would like to invite all you to this event and help us celebrate this event!

As I close my last article of the year I would like to thank the many staff, students, coaches, businesses and patrons that I have had the privilege of working with over the past thirty years.  The years have certainly flown by and it truly seems like yesterday that Mr. Learned offered me my very first teaching and coaching job!  It has been a fantastic run thanks to the support our school gets from our communities and I will look back fondly when I think back about my years at Linn Schools.  I may be making a change as far as careers are concerned but one thing will always remain constant.  I will ALWAYS be a Bulldog!

It is great to be a Bulldog!
