Opportunities for 7-11

Below are opportunities and scholarships for students in grades 7-11.

Senate Youth Program:  This program is for high school juniors and seniors that have an interest in understanding America's political process.  Our school can nominate one student for this program.  The program is from March 5th through March 12th.  See Mrs. Hoover for more details. Application deadline is October 11th.

Nestle Very Best in Youth:  This award focuses on the positive impact young people (ages 13-18) can make.  Winners can receive prizes and/or trips.  Some winners can donate to the charity of their choice.  To apply go to http://verybestinyouth.nestleusa.com.  Deadline is November 1st.

Prudential Spirit of Community Award: If you've made a difference by volunteering in your community over the past year, you could win $1000 and a trip to Washington, D.C. Middle school students and high school students can apply.  Just visit http://spirit.prudential.com, click on the "How to Apply" link, and follow the onscreen instructions.  When asked for the access key, type the word spirit. After completing the online form, either fill out Mrs. Converse's email information or print it out, sign it, and submit to Mrs. Converse by November 1st. 

KU's SWE Weekend of Engineering: This is a camp for high school girls that blends fun educational activities and a glimpse of the KU college experience.  See Mrs. Hoover for more information and/or application.  Dates available will be coming. 

Ayn Rand Essay Contest (8th, 9th & 10th grades): This contest involves reading Ayn Rand's book, Anthem and writing an essay on one of three topics.  Prizes range from $30 to the top prize of $2,000.  For rules or how to submit your essay go to www.aynrand.org/contests.  Entry deadline is March 20th.

Cadet Law Academy:  If you have an interest in law enforcement and a junior in high school, this annual academy will help you gain knowledge regarding the training and responsibilities of law enforcement officers.  This academy ill be help June 12-17, 2011.  See Mrs. Hoover for an application. Applications must be postmarked no later than March 31st.

Ayn Rand Essay Contest (11th grade): This contest involves reading Ayn Rand's book, The Fountainhead and writing an essay on one of three topics.  Prizes range from $50 to the top prize of $10,000.  For rules or how to submit your essay go to www.aynrand.org/contests.  Entry deadline is April 26th.

Ayn Rand Essay Contest (10th, 11th & 12th grade): This contest involves reading Ayn Rand's book, We the Living and writing an essay on one of three topics.  Prizes range from $25 to the top prize of $3,000.  For rules or how to submit your essay go to www.aynrand.org/contests.  Entry deadline is May 5th.

ACT Workshop:  Whether your a first-time test taker or want to improve your scores, this workshop will help you do your best on the test.  This workshop is for juniors and sophomores only. To register and/or get more information go to www.consider.k-state.edu/act.  The workshop will be held on the KSU campus on April 2nd.

Kansas State University Junior Days: During KSU Junior days you will attend breakout sessions to help discover KSU, each lunch in residence halls, visit academic representatives, and visit with current KSU students.  For more information and/or to register go to www.consider.k-state.edu/junior.

Fort Hays State University's Tiger Mania Sophomore/Junior Day: This is an opportunity for sophomores and juniors to find out more about FHSU.  To attend the April 7th day call 1-800-628-FHSU or see Mrs. Hoover.

Kansas Wesleyan University Junior Day:  Monday, April 19th has been set for junior day.  See Mrs. Hoover if interested in attending.
