Linn Public Schools Earn Governor's Achievement Award!

by Bryce Joonas

Small but mighty, is an excellent way to describe the Linn Public school system. In spite of budget constraints and all the so-called handicaps of smaller schools, Linn’s learning environment has shown its strength by earning the Governor’s Achievement Award. On Tuesday November 24, 2009 Senator Mark Taddiken came to take part in the assembly to recognize the students and staff for this outstanding achievement.

To qualify for this prestigious award, a school must be in the top five percent of all the schools in Kansas on the state assessment tests in the Reading and Math category and reach AYP (adequate yearly progress). Other factors for the qualification include the graduation rate at the high school level and the attendance rate at the grade school level.

Both Linn Elementary (K-8) and Linn High School (9-12) earned this distinction.  Linn High School was one of only eighteen high schools presented with this award and Linn Elementary was one of only 80 elementary facilities in the entire state to achieve this standard.

Senator Taddiken along with Principal Mr. Mike Savage, Counselor Mr. Tim Voelker, and the leadership team captains Miss Rebecca Fisher and Mrs. Carole Hergott formed a congratulatory line for the students earning Exemplary on the State Assessments. In all, 51 students received their certificates. To earn exemplary, a student must have scored in the top percentile on the test.

Principal Savage remarked, “We are proud of our students. These awards are due their efforts and our outstanding staff, parents and very supportive communities.”
