A Warm Welcome!
by Sue Hagedorn
The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will.
My name is Susan K. Hagedorn and I am truly blessed in my educational/counseling role in U.S.D. 223. In addition to serving as the K-12 School Counselor, I also enthusiastically am fulfilling roles as an ACT Prep instructor, a U.S.D. 223 Curriculum Team member, the MTSS English Language Arts facilitator, and the Cloud County Community College coordinator. Developing and orchestrating the U.S.D. 223 summer learning adventure, “Cool School,” has also been extremely rewarding. Growing up as the oldest of six children in a close-knit family of a rural community has afforded me endless opportunities to develop and enhance my intuitive ability to communicate with and educate the youth of today. Sharpening my role as an advocate for the promotion of the academic, moral, social, and physical welfare of my students continues to be a perpetual, personal life-long aim.
Focusing on the importance of modeling life-long learning and setting extremely high goals for my students, as well as myself, has rendered us much joy and satisfaction in our striving to meet them. I firmly believe “you cannot help someone get up a hill without getting closer to the top yourself.” My professional background includes:
- Bachelor of Science from Kansas State University
- Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Kansas State University
- Reading Specialist Degree from Emporia State University
- Master of Arts in Education from Baker University
-Master of Science in School Counseling and Student Development
from Kansas State University
- Reading Recovery Certification from Emporia State University
- Endorsements in English, General Science, Math, and Social Studies
- National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Certification
My educational philosophy can be simply stated, “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” Our lives are intertwined in a circle of experiences--the ones we make for ourselves and the ones we assist others in creating. With an unbridled enthusiasm, I remain committed in cultivation of the granting, creating, and generating of memorable learning experiences for ALL. Maintaining high expectations and believing in ALL students will teach EVERY child how to dream big! No significant learning occurs without a relationship. Establishing a trusting, unequivocal, genuine rapport with students allows for teaching the “whole child.” Guiding the youth as they grow and demonstrating to them in every possible way that they are special and will be cared for will not only motivate them to make a positive difference for others in this world, but it will also teach them to love and appreciate life!
The invitation to visit my classroom and office is perpetually warm. If you would like to contact me, my email address is firstname.lastname@example.org; my school phone is 785-337-2281, and my home phone is 785-337-2533. Honest, open communication is definitely the cornerstone for our reciprocal mutual success in safeguarding the education and welfare of your child(ren)!
