KSHSAA Board of Directors recently voted to allow more fans into basketball games STARTING JANUARY 29.
This will be the TVL attendance policy beginning January 29, 2021.
1. Away teams---will be allowed to bring parents/guardians/step parents only and are on the parent/guardian list and will check in at the gate. Individual schools may use the option to limit further if needed.
2. No cheerleaders at away games
3. Home teams----can use what their gym allows as well as county health and school board guidelines. Up to 4 spectators per family, with the gym staying at 50% capacity. Individual schools may use the option to limit further if needed.
In short, away games there is no change except, step parents/guardians will now be allowed to attend as well.
For home games, each participant (players, cheerleaders, managers, coaches) will be given 4 tickets per family to use at their discretion. We must keep our gym capacity at 50% or below. Anyone, regardless of age, must have a ticket to gain entrance. Masks and social distancing will still be required.

We have added a HS BB game to the schedule. On February 4th, we will be going to Hanover. Please watch for updates on times.

Information about Regional Cross Country
Good Morning,
I will be sending out a series of emails concerning the 1A regional XC meet at Leonardville over the next few days to provide visiting schools summarized information and updates they can pass onto their coaches and fans.
Our primary goal at Riley County is too provide a safe and competitive post season venue for Kansas high school student athletes. To help ensure the safety of all competitors and spectators we ask each school to adhere to the KSHSAA safety requirements listed below.
From KSHSAA:
We understand there are lots of questions about masks, attendance policies, alternate runners, etc. We understand that people may not like the guidelines we have set forth in cooperation with the medical community. Frankly, we don’t like limiting fans, limiting participants, having to wear masks, etc. But, we do have concern about community health and the spread of coronavirus via community spread at large events.
Face Masks – are required at all KSHSAA post-season events. Unless someone is in the middle of no where with no one around, they should have a mask. When people are yelling at runners or crowding to the start line or finish line to yell, these are prime places to possibly spread the virus unknowingly.
Limitations on participants - Each school can bring up to 7 runners of the 10 listed on the entry form. I understand the alternates are important and every coach wants them at the meet, but limiting the number of runners on site is part of our mitigation effort. I hope that coaches will show integrity and understand to bring additional runners (whether they run or not) is not fair to those that follow the rule. Each school is permitted 2 coaches (if they have 2) and one manager per gender.
Limitations on fans - Each runner is permitted 4 persons to support them at the regional meet – so 28 per school per gender if they have a full team. If you don’t have a full team, 4 persons per runner are permitted. Again, this is on the honor system, we don’t expect you to count everyone that comes in. Schools are expected to abide by this policy or the policy at the regional venue assigned. Those under 5 do not count toward the fan limit. They must stay with their parents or whoever brought them.
Thank you for your understanding,
Erik Willimon

Parents of Seniors,
I emailed the invite to the virtual financial aid meeting to the seniors. Please make sure they share it with you. It contains the Zoom link you need to join the meeting. The virtual financial aid meeting will be on October 28th at 7:00. Just click on the link to join the meeting. College Financial Aid officers will be available during the meeting to answer questions about filling out the FAFSA and other financial aid questions.
I shared information about completing the FAFSA and how to get a FSA ID with the seniors. Please make sure they show you this packet. You and your senior each need a FSA ID to fill out the FAFSA and you should get these FSA ID's as soon as possible. You do not have to wait until the Financial Aid meeting to complete the FAFSA. The packet I handed out to the seniors explains what to do. The meeting is for those that don't want to fill out the FAFSA on their own and those who have questions. Remember to get your FSA ID's right away.
Please email me at tvoelker@usd223.org if you plan to join the virtual financial aid meeting. If no one emails me, I will cancel the meeting.

It is time to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (the FAFSA) The general thought is that the sooner the FAFSA is submitted the better the chance of receiving Federal Aid. You and your son or daughter will each need to create an FSA ID before you can complete the FAFSA. There are some videos that may be helpful as you prepare to complete the FAFSA. Please google: FAFSA and FSA ID Tips for Parents. Please watch these videos and get the FAFSA completed. There is help available for every question. You may also contact the Financial Aid Office of the school your child is going to attend.
If you feel you need more assistance, on October 28th at 6:00 Cloud County Community College will conduct a virtual Financial Aid Meeting via Zoom. I will send out a Personal Meeting ID which you can click on to join the meeting. Then if you have more specific questions, members of their staff will move you into Zoom Breakout Rooms for the one-on-one meeting option. Please let me know if you want to join the meeting and don't have internet connection. I can arrange for you to come to school and use the school's internet.

Parents and Staff,
First, I want to sincerely thank all of you for your patience, support, and willingness to help as we finalize plans for the upcoming school year. As you know, this fall will present some unique challenges that none of us have dealt with, and it will take everyone working together like never before. Our plan is close to completion and we will offer virtual learning to those that are uncomfortable in a traditional school setting. My intent is to have the document to our Board of Education for approval today or tomorrow. Once they are satisfied with the contents, I will post them publicly. The plan is to have this out no later than Monday afternoon.
Our plan will follow national, state, and local guidelines to protect our students and staff as much as possible. Please know that the health and safety of our students and staff will continue to remain our top priority while continuing to provide a quality education to our students. There are many topics and scenarios to discuss and go through in finalizing this document. The contents will continuously evolve throughout the year as information and guidelines change from the State Department of Education, the State of Kansas, Washington County, and the CDC.
At this time, we have decided to move our K-12 student start date to Wednesday, August 19, 2020. The Barnes Pre-School start date will also move to Wednesday, August 19, 2020. Enrollment dates and times will stay the same.
Again, there is an excessive amount of variables to address and we may very well miss something initially. If you have any questions or comments, please contact me directly. I will post any and all pertinent updates to everyone through our district protocols.
I will continue to update you with information as it is finalized.
Thank you,
John Whetzal
Superintendent

Chronic absence is easily masked by school attendance statistics, even when average daily attendance appears relatively high. Even in a school with 95% daily attendance, 30% of the student population could be chronically absent. How is that possible? Find out: http://bit.ly/1oqfID7

A growing body of research reveals the prevalence of chronic absence and its critical role in student achievement. This research also shows that chronic absence can be addressed when school districts, communities, and policymakers work together to monitor the problem and implement solutions that target the underlying causes. Learn more here: http://bit.ly/1oqfID7

Too often, we think of reducing absences as the job of parents or school clerks in the front office. But communities across the country have started helping schools address chronic absence by building public awareness and leveraging resources. http://bit.ly/1oqfID7

Improving attendance is not rocket science, but it does take commitment, collaboration and tailored approaches to the particular strengths and challenges of each school or community. Let’s do it! http://bit.ly/1oqfID7

We have summer job opportunities available for high schoolers! There are a variety of full-time, part-time and PRN jobs available at Clay County Medical Center that would be perfect jobs for students over the summer or even as ongoing part-time positions during the school year. (PRN means you would work as needed, depending on our regular staff schedule.) We’re looking for students who are 16 years old or older.
Any of these jobs would get you into the hospital and would be great for your resume as you pursue a career in healthcare. Or even if you aren’t going to go into a medical field, these are good part-time jobs for students in general.
Following are areas where we have jobs available:
Summer radiology aide - 40 hours per week, great experience and great pay for a summer job. Great for your resume if you want to make it through the very selective process of getting into radiology school!
Environmental services
Part-time and PRN jobs available in the housekeeping and laundry departments.
Registration
PRN positions available as well as two regular relief positions available. Regular Relief consists of one to two weeknights from 4-10 p.m. and every other weekend either from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. or 2:30-10 p.m. in the ER/Walk-In Clinic.
