Seniors participated in Apply Kansas during the Apply Free Days on November 9th. All participating Kansas colleges and universities offered free applications. Students gathered in the library to work on submitting applications, enjoying donuts, and celebrating their success. The next senior event will be held on December 5th for seniors and parents regarding the new FAFSA changes.

Congratulations to all of our fall athletic teams on a very successful year! We are proud of all the hard work you put in during the season and off season to be the very best you could possibly be! School organized sports are truly a blessing for our students, families, schools, and communities! Sports can and should serve to teach our young people teamwork, discipline, work ethic, sportsmanship and character. Athletic programs do so much to foster growth and maturity in young people. They teach us what it means to work hard for a common purpose, to overcome obstacles, set and meet goals, all of these qualities are valuable and necessary throughout a successful and prosperous life. We are fortunate to be blessed with great athletic teams who have experienced great success over the years. While it is easy to get wrapped up in the moment of a close or exciting game, it is important to remember that while winning is fun, the most important purpose of sports is to teach the aforementioned attributes of a healthy sports program, good sportsmanship. Sports and activities are a privilege for our students, parents, and community to attend in a positive manner, however it is not a right and should be treated as such. I write this letter with the intent to encourage you to cheer positively for your child and team and refrain from any kind of negativity towards players, opponents, coaches, staff and especially referees. It is important that we set good examples for our young people that win or lose, we do it with class and treat others with dignity. Another purpose of sports is to learn to overcome adversities, such as calls that you may disagree with. In demonstrating good sportsmanship, we can teach and build character in our community, and our young people that will ultimately foster a safer and more enjoyable, game time atmosphere for all. The number one reason given for referees leaving the profession is fans heckling them. It is becoming increasingly difficult to find officials for all sports. Let's please do all we can to support our players, coaches, staff and referees. Thank you and good luck to all of our sports programs this winter season.

No hace daño. USD 223 Vision and Hearing screening I will begin the hearing and vision screening this month on the following classes: 3 and 4 year old preschoolers, kindergarteners, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th and 10th graders. This is a state requirement. The vision screening involves checking: Distance vision (ability to see objects/prints far away) Color vision (ability to see colors) Pupillary reactions (ability to follow from top to bottom and side to side, and reactions to light) If your child has had a recent eye exam please let me know when they had it and what the diagnosis was. If they are wearing glasses please let me know when they last saw the eye doctor. The hearing screening involves wearing a set of headphones and responding to various sounds. I will use an instrument that evaluates the ears of the preschoolers, it will be placed in their ear for about 5 seconds. It does not hurt. The screening takes 7-10 minutes for both to be completed. Please let me know if your child has ear tubes and when they were placed. I will notify you of the screening results via email – it may take me a couple of days to get the results to you. If you have any questions about the screening process please feel to email me at jtegtmeier@usd223.org. IF you do NOT want these screenings that are required by the state performed on your child please let me know via email by 11/27/2023 as that is the week I will start the screening processes.
